Building Business Relationships Through Podcasting: Finding Common Ground

In the vast digital landscape where countless podcasts compete for attention, sometimes the most meaningful connections happen when you least expect them. A recent episode of my podcast “Biz Bites for Thought Leaders” perfectly illustrates how podcasting can create unexpected business relationships and valuable connections through the simple discovery of common ground.

When Two Anthonys Meet

In a delightful twist of fate, I discovered another podcast host—also named Anthony, also with a show called “Biz Bytes” (though spelled with a ‘y’)—and we decided to collaborate. This serendipitous connection, facilitated by a mutual guest, demonstrates how the podcasting world can bring like-minded professionals together.

As I explained on the episode: “We’ve met each other and we thought we’ve got to do a podcast together. So from Biz Bites for Thought Leaders, meet Anthony from just straight Biz Bytes.”

The humour of our similar names and podcast titles wasn’t lost on us, with Anthony McMahon adding: “I was thinking before about how our listeners could tell us apart as we are talking, and I guess the difference is I’m a Kiwi. You’re an Australian.”

The Value of Finding Common Ground

Throughout our conversation, we discovered numerous shared perspectives despite coming from different backgrounds and specialisations. This common ground created an instant rapport that translated into engaging content for our listeners.

Our discussion around technology implementation in business revealed aligned thinking about prioritising substance over flash:

“If you take a bad process and put a good system over it, even if that system is AI, it doesn’t matter how much you spend on it, all you’re going to achieve is bad outcomes, faster,” noted Anthony McMahon.

I built on this idea: “You have to make sure that you’ve got quality as a foundation… The problem is if you systemise something that’s a rubbish process in the first place, yes you’re going to have a system for it. And it might even be automated, but it’s going to produce the same kind of rubbish.”

Authentic Connections Lead to Valuable Content

What makes this conversation particularly valuable is how our authentic connection created space for honest insights. Our shared experiences—from technology implementation challenges to podcast production realities—provided listeners with practical wisdom they could apply to their own businesses.

I highlighted this authenticity when discussing content creation: “One of the reasons why I love podcasting is because you generate this authentic content, and so the transcript allows you to reutilise that content in a multitude of different ways.”

Anthony McMahon reinforced this point when discussing the dangers of inauthentic content: “I needed a month-in newsletter and I just threw it into ChatGPT… A month later I came back and went, ‘God that just felt so ungenuine’… I actually owned it as well… I just put too much faith in the technology there and I can’t even tell you what I talked about last month.”

Building Bridges Between Communities

Perhaps most valuable was how this collaboration allowed both of us to introduce our respective audiences to new perspectives. By appearing on each other’s shows, we effectively bridged our communities, creating value for listeners of both podcasts.

As I noted toward the end of our conversation: “We like to share each other’s audiences. We want you to listen to both.”

The Power of Podcasting for Business Relationships

This unexpected meeting of the Anthonys perfectly demonstrates how podcasting creates opportunities for meaningful business relationships. Through our shared platform, we:

  1. Discovered unexpected common ground
  2. Created valuable content through authentic conversation
  3. Expanded our respective audiences
  4. Built a professional relationship that could lead to future collaborations
