Many people have asked me about podcasting because, deep down, they want to do it – but they havenโt quite taken the leap.
I get it. I was in the same boat for years.
The Road to Podcasting
For as long as I can remember, I had been looking for an excuse to start a podcast. Most of you know my background (and first love) was in radio – particularly talkback. Itโs where I earned my proverbial stripes, building large audiences in Australia through engaging topics and conversations.
Iโm proud of those days and will happily ramble on for hours about my experiences if prompted. I had the privilege of working alongside some big names, and I had an absolute blast doing it.
So, when podcasts became popular I knew I wanted in. But there was always a reason why the timing wasnโt right.
Maybe youโve felt the same way – held back by questions like:
- Not sure what to talk about?
- Can I really commit?
- What is the best microphone and equipment for my setup?
- Editing…
- How do I measure success?
For the longest time, I didnโt have a justifiable answer to that last one.
If Iโm running a business, success is about revenue, right?
What Does Success Look Like?
Does success mean securing sponsors and selling ads? Thatโs not me. And how do you even do that if you donโt have a show yet?
Does it mean inserting a sales pitch at the end of every episode? Well, if the usual marketing conversion rates apply, Iโd need a massive audience to make that worthwhile.
Or maybe the goal is to become a sought-after speaker, get booked for events, and earn an income doing that? But waitโฆ Iโd need to build an audience first. So, how does that happen?
The Turning Point
Then, something great happened – a client asked me to help them with a podcast. It was a limited series for a niche market. The best part? They handled the research and guest bookings. My role was hosting and producing the show.
That was my first real taste of podcasting.
From there, a few other opportunities came along until I started a show with a couple of peers. What began as a networking event evolved into deep discussions about real issues. I suggested recording it – just like that, a podcast was born.
But while I loved that show, it wasnโt truly mine.
My Podcasting Revelation
I took a step back to really think about my business – how I was spending my time and what I wanted to achieve.
Then, the lightbulb moment happened.
The purpose of my business is to help change the world for the better, one conversation at a time.
Talkback radio taught me an important lesson: the key to building a large audience is to speak as if youโre talking to one person. When you engage with just one listener, everyone tuning in feels like youโre speaking directly to them.
Looking at the past year, I realised Iโd had hundreds of meaningful conversations with people who could help me achieve my greater purpose. So, I turned my network into a podcast โ Biz Bites was born.
It wasnโt about me – it was about sharing ideas, showcasing experts, and providing value. Through those conversations, listeners also learned about me in an authentic way.
Defining Success Differently
For me, the success of my podcast isnโt about downloads or ad revenue. Itโs about:
- How my guests feel after being on the show.
- Their willingness to share our episodes.
- Building a catalogue of amazing people I can reference.
And hereโs the kickerโฆ
The System That Makes It Easy
Once I had a clear purpose, I developed a system so that all I have to do is show up and have great conversations.
Everything else? Handled.
There is no need for me to:
- Book the guests
- Track down details for show notes
- Create graphics or upload episodes
- Write the promotional posts
- Edit the episodes (definitely not!)
Thatโs all taken care of by a team – so I can focus on hosting and building meaningful connections with my guests.
