The global revolution is well and truly here.
- How do you embrace it?
- Networking is not easy to get results locally, but worldwide?
- Isn’t the setup required too technical to make it look professional?
Let me address these…
If there was one good thing that came from the pandemic, it was opening up online technologies to businesses that had otherwise been closed to the idea.
I recall several years ago asking several businesses about making a meeting online, and I was usually told, “Our IT department will not let us install that software”.
That clearly doesn’t fly these days because almost every business is happy to access one, if not all, of the online meeting tools.
Fast forward to today, for many professional services (from technology-based to financial, HR, coaching, etc.) and management consultants, you don’t need to do business just with people in your local area.
The first choice you have to make is whether or not you need to be geographically restricted in your business.
On the one hand that then opens up new markets, but on the other, it can get scary in trying to work out how to target them, which is where podcasting comes in.
Your network grows immediately when you take the attitude that your voice can be heard in a global market through the power of podcasting and backed up by your social media (including YouTube where even your audio files can be optimised to get picked up in search results long after the episode has aired).
Even at networking events, you don’t have to sell to people or spend a lot of time initially talking to them, just point them to subscribe to your podcast.
Next is the issue of guests because many of you want them on your show.
I do encourage you to download my guide to: ‘5 Secrets People Don’t Tell You About Becoming a Successful Podcaster’, where I have a lot more information about how to make guests work on your show without ruining your credibility.
While you can look at some high-end celebrity-based podcasts and think you need to have everyone in a studio with you, the truth is that it is irrelevant to where you need to be positioned.
Let’s be real here: you are not looking to be the next Conan, Joe Rogan or Steve Bartlett, at least not initially.
When you reach the point where you have pulling power, people will come to you from all over the world; great, we can have a different conversation.
That leads me to…
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether you need a studio to have a professionally run podcast.
The answer is no.
Most people will listen to your podcast, and if they watch it, you can make your office look great very easily.
The most important thing you need to have is a good-quality microphone.
If you are going to video it (and we suggest you do it for the social media videos and just publish your podcast as audio only), then there are a few things you will need, like lighting.
Simply, for you to have a professional podcast in all aspects has more to do with your desire to make it happen and not be the person responsible for it.
